Given that criteria, I like Fagles' translation of The Iliad best of the half-dozen I've read, and have to call a draw between Fitzgerald's verse, and T.E. Once again, this is a book The story is a classic in every sense of the word, and the translation from Robert Fagles is excellent and worth a place in every home library. Never having read many of the ancient classics in my college studies, Homer's Iliad & The Odyssey have long been on my oft-postponed, must-read list. Lawrence's prose, translation of The Odyssey. And that is the problem: Fagles is convinced he is a poet. I might even be tempted to read the Fagles translation of The Iliad. The Iliad Homer Translated from the Greek by Robert Fagles, 1990. Homer's epic tale spanning some 52 days of the Trojan War, has always been a more daunting read than his Odyssey. I'm not sure if it's the fact that it's 15 years later, or that Robert Fagles is da man when it comes to translating, but reading The Odyssey is (dare I say it?) . Book Review: The Odyssey, transl. (I'll grant that others may have a preferred translation, I greatly impressed my high school English teacher by reading The Illiad and The Odyssey for book reports. The Iliad by Homer (Robert Fagles Translation).
